Sheyda Research 2006

This blog is a virtual diary of my travels to Iran from June 30 to August 17, 2006. The nature of my travel is to research the ways a master craft-artist mentors an apprentice in the traditional arts of Iran.

An Enjoyable Evening in Tehran

We went to my cousin Tous' house last night and took Lily (Afshar) with us. She brought her guitar with her and played us a few pieces. She is very good. The gang really enjoyed her company. We had a very nice time. My friend, Yousef who is married to my good friend Zari, came also. As it turns out, he knows Tous. Ramin, as it also turns out, knows Lily. Well, who doesn't Ramin know? It was such a blast, with Ramin, Lily, Tous, and Yousef cracking jokes and making funny comments. At one point, Lily said she was so jetlagged she wouldn't be able to sleep, and Ramin responded: "Play a lullaby for yourself. That'll put you to sleep."

Pictured from left to right in Tous' music room are: Ramin, Lily, a friend of Tous, my cousin Shahrokh (pesarkhaleh) and my cousin Tous (pesarkhaleh). Lily spent the night at our place but left in the morning to start three days of concentrated guitar workshops. She teaches a lot of people and has a big following here in Iran where classical guitar is really loved. Go girl!
